The People & Places Lecture Series is coming again, and the Tipperary County Council Library Service is quite excited about it. These interesting lectures will start at 7:00 p.m. on the third Tuesday of every month from October 2023 through March 2024. With a broad range of subjects and speakers that are sure to enthrall and educate, this series is intended to appeal to a broad audience. The schedule of the next lectures is as follows:
October 17th - Dr. Brian Gurrin"The Surviving
1766 Religious Census Returns for Cashel and Emly Diocese"
Dr. Brian Gurrin's talk
will explore the fascinating world of the Cashel and Emly diocese's 1766
religious census results. Despite obstacles like the Public Record Office's
destruction in 1922, these historical records helped to preserve the cultural
heritage and provided an understanding of the religious atmosphere of the era.
Dr. Gurrin will describe how these documents can be an important research tool,
especially when it comes to Tipperary's past.
November 21 - Dr.
Salvador Ryan
"Remember Me: A
Social and Cultural History of Memorial Cards"
In his talk, Dr.
Salvador Ryan will examine the significant meaning that memorial cards have had
in Irish culture over the last 150 years. These precious mementos have affected
politics and religion as well as serving as an important element of the
mourning process for the deceased. Renowned historian Dr. Ryan will provide
special insights into the cultural background of these cards.
December 19th - Dr.
Denis G. Marnane
"Tipperary in
1923"
We shall be led by Dr.
Denis G. Marnane through a critical juncture in Tipperary's history in 1923.
Using a multitude of sources, such as historical documents, Marnane's
investigation will offer a thorough picture of this momentous time.
23 January: Ross
Drummond
"Medieval
Tipperary: Recent Findings from Archaeological Excavations"
Renowned poet and
archaeologist Ross Drummond will discuss new findings from archaeological
excavations at Borrisokane and Tipperary Town. These discoveries provide fresh
insights into the medieval history of the area, including possible religious
assemblages and communities.
"Tipperary Republicans
in New York during the Great Depression" by Dr. Gavin Wilk, February 20.
The stories of
Tipperary Republicans who immigrated to New York following the Irish Revolution
will be told by Dr. Gavin Wilk, with an emphasis on their experiences during
the Great Depression. Wilk's presentation offers a distinct perspective into
the lives of these people during a difficult historical era by utilizing
archival data.
