Even though the
government hospital and healthcare system in Birgunj do not offer treatment for
mental problems, this past Tuesday was observed as World Mental Health Day with
a number of events.
The municipal authority
in Birgunj held a celebration despite the absence of mental health care in
public hospitals.
The Health Department of Birgunj Metropolitan City set up a program at Ghantaghar (clock tower) on this particular occasion. However,
it's crucial to remember that treatment for mental diseases isn't available,
not even at Narayani Hospital, the main hospital in Madhes Pradesh.
Birgunj
has made the choice to refer people with mental health issues who seek care at
the city's medical facilities to the National Medical College in response to
this situation. Anil Yadav, the director of the Health Department of Birgunj Metropolitan City, supported this strategy.

Even in Narayani
Hospital, where there is a lack of doctors for mental health, patients are
examined by general physicians in the emergency room. They are either treated
on-site or referred to other hospitals.
For the past two years,
Narayani Hospital has been without a mental health department after the sole
mental health doctor was transferred. According to Dr. Uday Narayan Singh, the
hospital's spokesperson, the doctor's transfer led to the discontinuation of
mental health treatment at the hospital.
Finding a new doctor to
manage mental health issues has been difficult since few medical professionals
want to work at government facilities. As a result, it is now challenging to
provide proper mental health treatment.
Patients with mental
health problems from eight districts in the province are seen in the main
government hospital in Narayani, but due to a lack of treatment options, they
are forced to go to private clinics or hospitals. Unfortunately, this problem
hasn't received much attention recently.
