The Government's Policy Of Permit Only Sedan Electric Taxis Is Wrong

Kathmandu: Kulman Ghising, the Executive Director of Nepal Electricity Authority, emphasized the need to embrace all brands of electric vehicles in Nepal, challenging the current policy of exclusively permitting electric taxis. Speaking at the 'E-Drive Nepal Software' public program in Kathmandu on Thursday, Ghising argued that restricting permission to operate only electric taxis could lead to higher costs and prices.

Electric Taxis Is Wrong

Ghising urged the government to open road permits for electric vehicles and provide accommodations for replacing petrol-powered taxis with electric ones. He stated that allowing taxis of any brand would foster healthy competition and prevent a monopoly that could escalate costs.

Highlighting the success of the electric vehicle initiative, Ghising revealed that 10,000 to 15,000 electric vehicles have been imported into Nepal, with an increasing number of electric public microbuses operating on various routes. He emphasized the economic benefits of electric vehicles, noting that their cost is 15 times cheaper than petroleum vehicles.

Ghising shared impressive statistics, stating, "On a single day, 2,000 electric vehicles were checked at the charging stations built by the authority. All charging stations across the country are full of vehicles." He also underscored the potential impact on Nepal's trade deficit, suggesting that replacing the import of diesel and petrol with electricity consumption could lead to a positive shift in the nation's trade balance.

In conclusion, Ghising commended the efforts of eDrive Nepal but urged a more inclusive approach, advocating for the consent of all taxis, regardless of brand, and the opening of road permits for electric vehicles. His vision aims to not only transform the transportation sector but also contribute significantly to reducing Nepal's trade deficit.
